Birdstone, Porphyry, Fantail: Considered the finest porphyry popeye birdstone so far discovered. Highly polished and highly developed with cream phenocrysts; good condition. 3 7/8 x 1 1/2 "The Smithsonian Bird" Vernon Co. Wisconsin. Pictured in Stone Art by Gerald Fowke, Bureau of American Ethnology Annual Report 1891-92 page 126 figure 152. Embossed on the front cover of BNAI and pictured on page 77 (center) as well as page 679-A. Also pictured in Legends I page 230 & 231, Legends II page 140 & 202, and Masterpieces of Prehistoric Art Volume 1 page 4.
